  AS REVIEWED

“PRESUMED LOST shines a light on one of WWII’s darker chapters and provides further evidence of the submarine service’s immeasurable contribution to the war effort in the Pacific. It is a harrowing account of heroism and human endurance in the face of systematic abuse, humiliation, torture and enslavement by a brutal and cruel Japanese military. Highly recommended!”—Gannon McHale, author of Stealth Boat: Fighting the Cold War in a Fast Attack Submarine

"Here are the unforgettable true stories of the horrors faced by the crews of seven American submarines lost in World War II, men who were captured, tortured and used as slave laborers by the Japanese. Stephen L. Moore’s exhaustively researched chronicle demonstrates what it took to survive against captors who used water boarding and other forms of severe torture, war crimes for which they later were charged and convicted by the U.S. government."—Carl LaVO , author of Back From the Deep

"With Presumed Lost Stephen L. Moore has provided afficiandos of the submarine service with an invaluable resource. His reliance on primary source material, particularly oral interviews of the survivors, are priceless. Moore achieves a level of intensity that only those few veterans of both the World War II Silent Service and victims of brutal Japanese captivity in the Pacific can truly understand. Moore guides his readers through the experiences of incredibly brave men and patriots. Presumed Lost is a naval history that has been needed for a long time, and Moore deserves our congratulations for a masterful work well-done."—Joseph Mark Scalia, author of Germany’s Last Mission to Japan: The Failed Voyage of U-234

"Fighting World War II in submarines was a risky endeavor. Even worse for submariners was having to endure the wartime years in Japanese prison camps, especially while grieving for lost shipmates and trying to maintain hope for the future. In this masterpiece, Stephen Moore has drawn on many, many sources to create a work that is both encyclopedic in coverage and highly readable."—Paul Stillwell, Editor of Submarine Stories: Recollections from the Diesel Boats

“In his third book about World War II submarines, Steve Moore has erased another substantial part of the 'Silent' in 'Silent Service.' This detailed research is about the 196 survivors from submarines lost and their capture by the Japanese. It is a chilling story of their abuse and a thrilling story of a few survivors who escaped from their submarine resting on the bottom, 180 feet deep in the China Sea.”—Cdr. Daniel D. Decker Jr., USN (Ret.), U.S. Submarine Veteran of World War II

Presumed Lost relates the loss of the seven United States submarines of World War II from which Americans were taken prisoner by the Japanese. Of the 525 submariners who set sail on the last patrol of these seven boats, only 158 would ever see their country again. Two boats, Grenadier and Perch, were so badly damaged by enemy depth charge attacks that their crews were forced to scuttle their subs. Sculpin and S-44 were sunk with heavy loss of lives while fighting it out with Japanese combat ships on the surface. Robalo struck a mine and very few of her sailors were able to swim to an island. Tang and Tullibee were struck by their own faulty torpedoes while executing torpedo attacks on the surface. Only one man, Cliff Kuykendall, survived Tullibee. Nine men survived the loss of Tang, five of whom swam to the surface after their boat had settled in 180 feet of water.

Based on personal interviews, diaries, POW statements and action reports, Presumed Lost tracks the incredible ordeal to survive these servicemen endured. For those who did eventually return to America after the war's end, many would find that their loved ones had no knowledge that they had been alive. Official notification had been given to their families that their ships had been sunk and the men were simply "presumed lost."
